choosing a paint color to sell

If you’re prepping your home for sale, the paint color you choose matters more than you might think. Let’s talk about the role of gray in home decor, whether it’s still a safe bet, and which colors are helping sellers move faster and for more money.

Is gray still a smart choice?

For years, gray was the neutral: slate walls, charcoal accent rooms, gray everything. But according to recent insights, it’s losing some resale favor. Experts at House Beautiful say that “grays often feel cold and un-welcoming” and now recommend warmer neutrals like taupes and greiges instead.

Likewise, the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) reports in their “Styled, Staged & Sold” blog that warm neutrals dominate buyer preference, while light-gray interior schemes lag behind. So while gray isn’t dead, it’s not the “safe neutral” it once was in the sales game. Personally, I find an all-gray house to be a big turn off to buyers at this point…it feels super “last year” and dated.

Colors that can help sellers sell faster and for more

Here’s what current research shows (and I agree with):

  • Warm whites and off-whites lead interior choices for resale appeal. (House Beautiful)
  • Soft taupes, warm greiges (that lean beige) instead of cool silvery-gray tones. (House Beautiful)
  • According to Zillow, some darker accent tones—navy blue, dark olive green—can even boost resale value when used thoughtfully.
  • NAR says bold, bright colors could distract buyers from imagining themselves in the space.

What this means for you as a seller

If your walls are painted in cool-toned gray, don’t panic—they’re not “wrong.” But if you’re prepping your home for listing, repainting into a warmer neutral might improve appeal and market velocity. The goal is to create a blank canvas where buyers see themselves, not your decorating snapshot. Also a new paint color may improve our listing photos and attract more buyers—the goal!
